Just quickly – here are my top three things to pack on your trip:

How Far is a Flight to Fiji from Australia and New Zealand
Fiji from Australia
How far is a flight to Fiji from Australia? From the centre of Australia to Fiji its approximately 4500km to Fiji. Flying to Fiji will cover around that distance, depending on your starting point. Flights from the East Coast of Australia will travel the least distance. For instance a flight from Brisbane to Fij covers 2770 kms.
If you’re flying from Brisbane or Sydney you’ll find yourself on a short flight of 3-4 hours. If flying from further away like Perth, expect to double or triple that time. This is not only due to distance, but also because you’ll need to change flights in Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney before you get to Fiji.
Fiji from New Zealand
A flight from New Zealand to Fiji will cover just under 3000 kms (1790 miles) from the South Island, and around 2140 kms (1313 miles) from the North Island. Direction wise, Fiji is above New Zealand. Traveling to Fiji from New Zealand is one of the quickest ways to get there alongside Australia.
Flights from the North Island are a better choice due to avoiding stopovers, which will lengthen your flight. For example, many flights from the South stop over in Auckland or Australia, thus extending how far you have to travel. This can easily mean a journey of 8-26 hours depending on time spent waiting for your connecting flight. Meanwhile from Auckland you have a better chance of a connecting flight meaning a 3 hour direct flight or a 9 hour journey with a stopover.
How Far is a Flight to Fiji from North America
Fiji from the USA
The United States is a massive country so distances can vary wildly depending on your departure city. From California its approximately 5514 miles / 8954 kms to fly to Fiji. On the other hand from New York the distance is 12683 kms / 7952 miles.
A flight from California is around 11 hours, and direct flights are common. Flights from New York take roughly double the time since you’ll have a stopover most likely in San Francisco or L A.
Fiji from Hawaii
The direct flight distance from Hawaii to Fiji is roughly 3176 miles / 5111kms, however nearly all flights require a stopover in the USA first. This lengthens the distance you’ll be flying, and means the journey including stop over, most likely in LA, is around 18 hours including wait times.
In other words if you have the choice to fly out from the mainland or Hawaii, its more direct to fly from Los Angeles where you’ll be able to nab a direct flight.
Fiji from Canada
If flying from Canada you’re going to be in transit for 15-21 hours if leaving from Vancouver, with a stop in the US. Stopovers will most likely be in San Francisco or Los Angeles. From Toronto it will be 18-28 hours and 1-2 stopovers.
It’s 12425 kms / 7649 miles between Toronto and Fiji, and 5874 miles / 9453kms from Vancouver to Fiji.
How Far is A Flight From Nearby Islands
Fiji from Vanuatu
Vanuatu and Fiji are quite close to each other, with a direct flight distance of 742 miles / 1194 kms. Flying time can vary, depending on your starting point in Vanuatu. Port Vila has direct flights, with all other cities including a stopover in the capital. A flight from Port Vila is roughly 2 hours. If flying from other cities expect a journey time of 11 hours, most of which involves waiting for your connecting flight in Port Villa.
As you can see, the distance you’ll fly is greatly dependent on your starting destination. If you want a direct flight, head to Port Vila by bus or ferry.
Fiji from Samoa
Samoa is a similar distance from Fiji, with an average flight distance of 711 miles / 1145 kms. If you’re flexible with your days, you can find a direct flight from Apia, Samoa to Nadi in Fiji. If you can’t leave on a direct flight day, there are much longer flights available which have stopovers in Auckland. Those flights may be a 22 hour journey which increases the distance you fly massively due to the stopover.
To reduce the distance you have to fly to get between Samoa and Fiji, I’d strongly recommend being flexible with your dates to line up a direct flight. In addition, Apia is the city you’ll need to depart from for a direct flight.
Fiji from Tonga
The flight distance between Vava’u and Fiji (namely Nadi) is 751 miles / 1208 kms. Or 498 miles / 801 kms from Tongatapu. Luckily its fairly easy to get a direct flight between Fiji and both of these destinations. If you’re having trouble finding a direct flight play around with your days, as they’re definitely available, just not every day of the week. Flights range from 1.5 -3 hours.
How Far is a Flight to Fiji from Asia
A lot of people also visit Fiji from Asia, especially from Japan. If you want to know the distance to Fiji from Asia, this is your section. Please note however from Asia most departures aren’t direct flights, so the distance might be greater depending on your actual route.
Fiji from Malaysia
These two countries are not too far apart from each other, with a flight distance of 5400 miles / 8700kms. This doesn’t actually mean its a quick trip to get from Malaysia to Fiji however. Most flights from Malaysia to Fiji are not direct flights because the route is not a popular one. You can expect 1-2 stops either in New Zealand, Australia or Singapore. Due to the non-direct route, you should expect a 15-17 hour flight.
Fiji from China
Flight distance from China is 5034 miles if going direct, which is equivalent to 8134 kms. Flights from China will likely involve a stop in Australia, Singapore or New Zealand. However at the moment due to Coronavirus its difficult to get a handle on the type of flights available.
If no direct flights pop up, keep in mind a stop over will add to the time and distance of your journey. You could be looking at a journey time between 15 to 24 hours if 1-2 stopovers are needed from China.
Fiji from Japan
The great news here is that as long as you’re flexible with the day of the week you’ll fly, you will be able to find a decently priced direct flight from Japan to Fiji. The flight distance is 4463 miles / 7181 kms from Japan, which translates into about 8 hours of flight time.
Fiji from Thailand
The flight distance between Fiji and Thailand is 5779 miles and 9300 kms. Bangkok in Thailand is a flight hub for Asia, however due to the effects of the pandemic, flights are greatly reduced at the moment. Your flight at this time will likely have 1-2 stopovers in Australia and / or Singapore, lengthening your trip to 17-25 hours of transit time.
This means you’ll cover more distance and be in the air for longer than taking a direct flight. However as the pandemic slows I expect to see more options coming out of Thailand.

Fiji from England
Flying from England to Fiji can take a little bit of time, with a direct flight distance of 10118 miles (16238 kms). However, flight time can be around 24 hours if flying from London due to needing a stop over in the US, which increases the distance you’ll travel.
Start from a city other than London and a second stopover may be added on. The reason there aren’t many, if any direct flights from England is due to Fiji not being as popular as other holiday options for English tourists.
Fiji from France
How far is a flight from France to Fiji? 10,289 miles / 16558 kms. France, and Paris more specifically, is one of the better places to fly to Fiji in Europe. The stop will likely be in San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Fiji from Italy
A rough flight distance from Rome, Italy to Fiji is 10,578 miles and 17,023 kms. That being said, a flight from Italy will be a 28-35 hour trip involving 2 stopovers in the United States and / or elsewhere in Europe. The reason for this being that Italy to Fiji is not a common route.
Fiji from Germany

Fiji from Switzerland

Expect a stop (or stops) in Australia, elsewhere in Europe or in the United states. The journey will be 28-35 hours in total, although you wont spend all of that time on the plane, as you’ll have some land time at stopovers.
Fiji from Scotland
Expect a flight distance of 9812 miles / 15790 kms if flying to Fiji from Scotland. The transit time is long, between 28-34 hours due to most flights requiring 2 stopovers in the United States. There do not seem to be any direct flights to Fiji from Scotland since the distance is so great and Fiji is not a common destination for Scots.
Fiji from Ireland
9995 miles is the flight distance from Ireland to Fiji, working out to be 16086 in kms. Most flights from Ireland will involve 1-2 stops and can take between 26-35 hours with stopovers most commonly in the United States. Based on this you can conclude Fiji is not too popular of a destination from Ireland so if you like going to destinations your friends haven’t yet been too, Fiji is a great choice.
Fiji from Russia
The flying distance is 911 miles/ 14664 kms from Russia to Fiji. However, expect a flight from Russia to include 2 stopovers, increasing the distance you’ll travel. Journey time will be around 25-40 hours with stopovers in Asia, the US and/or other countries in Europe.
Is Flight the Best Way to Get to Fiji?
Yes. Fiji is an island so until someone invents deep sea buses and trains you’re limited on your transport methods.
Most people will fly into Fiji from neighbouring countries, although you may be able to get there by boat if you’re doing a bigger trip in the region.
The obvious alternative is to hop on a South Pacific cruise – one that takes you around multiple islands. These are popular from Australia or New Zealand and take the hassle out of getting there, and getting around.

Is going to Fiji Worth the Flight Time?
Fiji has the kind of picture perfect islands you’d see on a screen saver. It’s a great destination for mid range or luxury travelers. For budget travelers or backpackers its still a beautiful place to visit, but keep in mind you’ll pay a little more than you will in Asia.
Fiji is definitely worth your time, especially if traveling from the United States, Australia or New Zealand. Other starting points with long flight times, distances and stopovers may give you some pause though. I would still say go for it, but prepare for a long flight.
Alternatively another great option for visiting Fiji is to take a cruise. There are a ton of multi-island cruises departing from Australia and New Zealand, although you trade in air time for sea time. Do you research before making a choice.
